Why your take-home pay is less than your salary

Three things come out of almost every US paycheck: federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%). Most states add their own income tax, and a few add payroll programs such as paid leave.

On a $60,000 salary, those federal taxes come to $9,610, leaving $50,390 a year. Your state can change that a lot: the same salary leaves $45,996 in Oregon, or $4,394 less than in a state with no tax on wages. Compare all 48 states.

What changed for 2026

  • New deductions. Tips (up to $25,000), overtime (up to $12,500, or $25,000 for couples) and $6,000 for people 65 or older, each within income limits. A new W-4 can put them in your paycheck now.
  • A bigger child amount. The W-4 now counts $2,200 for each child under 17.
  • A higher 1099 threshold. Businesses now report payments of $2,000 or more to a contractor on the 1099-NEC, up from $600.
