Uber Tax Calculator
Uber drivers, including Uber Eats couriers, are independent contractors. Uber doesn’t withhold tax, so you set money aside and pay quarterly. On $45,000 of earnings and 25,000 miles, that means setting aside about $3,658 for federal tax in 2026.

Federal self-employment and income tax for a single filer with no other job, driving about 56 business miles per $100 earned. Add state tax where it applies.
How the tax on $45,000 of Uber pay works out
- Start with your profit. $45,000 of earnings, minus $18,566 for 25,000 business miles, minus $3,500 of other costs, leaves $22,934.
- Self-employment tax. Social Security and Medicare on that profit come to $3,240.
- Federal income tax. After half of that tax, the standard deduction and the $1,043 QBI deduction, $4,171 is taxable, which comes to $417.
- Set aside the total. $3,658 a year, or about $914 a quarter, plus any state income tax.
Uber tax forms
Uber can send a Form 1099-K for rider payments (if you pass $20,000 and 200 trips) and a 1099-NEC for other pay of $2,000 or more. It also gives every driver an annual tax summary with online miles and fees.
What Uber drivers can deduct
- Miles driven while online, including miles waiting for and driving to riders
- Uber service fees and booking fees taken from your fares
- Your phone and data plan (the business share)
- Tolls, parking, and water or snacks for riders
For 2026 the IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5¢ a mile until June 30 and 76¢ from July 1, about 74.3¢ on average. At that rate, every 1,000 business miles cuts your taxable profit by about $743.
Good to know
- Your 1099-K shows gross fares before Uber’s fees, so deducting those fees matters.
- With the standard mileage rate you can’t also deduct gas, car washes, repairs or insurance.
- Uber’s tax summary lists your online miles, a useful starting point for your mileage deduction.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I set aside for taxes from Uber?
For federal tax, Uber drivers typically need to set aside about 7% to 9% of what they earn, depending on how much they make and drive, plus more in states with an income tax. For example, $45,000 of Uber earnings with 25,000 business miles works out to about $3,658 of federal tax in 2026, or 8% of earnings.
Do I have to pay taxes on Uber if I made less than $2,000?
Yes. The $2,000 limit only decides whether Uber has to send you a 1099-NEC. All your earnings are taxable, and you owe self-employment tax once your net profit reaches about $433.
Can Uber drivers deduct gas?
Not if you use the standard mileage rate, which most drivers do: the 74.3¢ average rate for 2026 already covers gas, maintenance, insurance and depreciation. You can deduct actual car costs instead, but then you can’t use the mileage rate for that car.
