What is a W-9 form, and who asks for one?
Form W-9, “Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification”, gives a business your correct name and tax ID so it can report what it pays you to the IRS. You’ll usually be asked for one when:
- you start freelancing or contracting for a client, who will send you a 1099-NEC
- you join a gig or selling platform such as DoorDash, Uber or Etsy
- a bank or broker opens an account that pays interest or dividends
- you rent property to a business, or receive certain other payments
Being paid on a W-9 usually means no tax is withheld, so you’ll owe self-employment and income tax yourself. The 1099 tax calculator shows how much to set aside.
How to fill out a W-9 form, line by line

Frequently asked questions
What is a W-9 form?
Form W-9 is the IRS form you use to give your correct taxpayer identification number (your Social Security number or EIN) to a business that will pay you. The business uses it to report those payments to the IRS, usually on Form 1099.
Do I send my W-9 to the IRS?
No. Give the completed W-9 to the person or business that asked for it, such as a client, a platform or a bank. They keep it on file and use it to fill out information returns.
Which W-9 form should I use in 2026?
The current official version is Form W-9 (Rev. March 2024). The IRS has drafted a newer revision, but until it is final, the Rev. March 2024 form is the one to use. This page fills the official IRS form.
Can I sign a W-9 electronically?
Many requesters accept an electronic signature, and the IRS allows them to set up electronic W-9s. If your requester needs a handwritten signature, choose “I’ll sign by hand”, then print, sign and scan the PDF.
Which box should a single-member LLC check?
A single-member LLC that is a disregarded entity checks “Individual/sole proprietor”, puts the owner’s name on line 1 and the LLC’s name on line 2. LLCs taxed as corporations or partnerships check “LLC” and enter C, S or P.
Is it safe to fill out a W-9 online here?
Yes. This page creates the PDF on your own device; your name, address and Social Security number or EIN are never sent to us or stored. Share the finished form only with the requester, using a secure method if they offer one.
