California paycheck taxes in 2026

California taxes income in nine brackets from 1% to 12.3% in 2026, plus a 1% surcharge on taxable income over $1 million. Employees also pay 1.3% of all wages for State Disability Insurance (SDI).

  • Brackets, the standard deduction ($5,900 single, $11,800 joint) and the personal exemption credit ($158 single, $316 joint) rose 3.4% for 2026 to keep up with inflation.
  • State Disability Insurance (SDI), which also funds Paid Family Leave, takes 1.3% of every dollar you earn. There has been no wage cap since 2024.
  • The extra 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax applies to taxable income over $1 million and isn’t adjusted for inflation.

Pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions lower both your federal and California taxable income, so they increase your take-home pay per dollar saved.
