South Carolina paycheck taxes in 2026

A 2026 law cut South Carolina to two rates: 1.99% on the first $30,000 of taxable income and 5.21% above that. A new income-adjusted deduction replaces the federal standard deduction and shrinks as income rises.

  • Act 110 (H.4216), signed March 30, 2026, replaced the 0%/3%/6% brackets with 1.99% and 5.21%, starting with 2026.
  • The new South Carolina Income Adjusted Deduction is $15,000 single, $22,500 head of household and $30,000 joint. It phases out between $40,000 and $95,000 of income for single filers ($80,000–$190,000 joint).
  • Employers’ 2026 withholding tables were set before the law passed, so many paychecks withhold more than the tax actually owed and the difference comes back as a refund.

Pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions lower both your federal and South Carolina taxable income, so they increase your take-home pay per dollar saved.
